“Yes” - said Alex, “I would probably be a Janitor at a Hotel.”

A hard-working janitor, Alex, had recently immigrated into the country and had been working at a very nice hotel. He unfortunately had never learned to read and write in his former country but that did not stop him doing his work very well and was admired by his colleagues and employer.

One day it was announced that the hotel was being bought by a large organisation and a new management team was installed. There were lots of meetings as the new management team took over and modernised the hotel. It was all going fine with lots of staff meetings and training for all the staff.

One day the main trainer, Peter, asked all the staff to write about their experiences with the new regime and how they thought things were going. This gave Alex a major problem as he could not write at all. He managed the trainings up until now as they were mostly verbal but writing at length was impossible for him.

He finally plucked up the courage and went to speak to the trainer who was very surprised to hear this. Peter knew what a good worker Alex was, but he said he had to hand all the observations into the new General Manager of the hotel.

Peter went along to the General Manager, who was also surprised to hear about Alex's illiteracy.

“Unfortunately, we will just have to let him go” - the manager said. “We have so many Health and Safety protocols to observe and he won't be able to pass them if he can't read and write”.

Peter was given the task to inform Alex about the decision, which he did with a very heavy heart.

Alex was shocked and terribly disappointed as he had put his heart and soul into his job and loved it so much, and now he had to leave. So, Alex left and time passed.

Because of his lack of literacy Alex became a general trader as he only had to understand the basics of buying and selling. Because of his great work ethic, he rapidly grew his business and was then able to employ other people who could do the necessary paperwork for him. He got married and had 2 wonderful sons who he made sure got a very good education.

On his seventieth birthday he decided it was time to go along to his lawyer to get his will sorted out. He took his 2 sons with him to the lawyer’s office. The lawyer had prepared a complex will as Alex had now amassed a large fortune with multiple businesses. The lawyer passed the will over to Alex to read and agree to.

“A lot of work has gone into this; “I hope it meets your requirements” the lawyer said.

Immediately Alex passed the will to his 2 sons to read.

“I really think you should read the will yourself” said the lawyer said.

“But I can't read” said Alex.

The lawyer was shocked! “You can't read!!” he exclaimed “But you are a multi-millionaire! Just imagine what you would be if you could read?”

“Yes” - said Alex, “I would probably be a Janitor at a Hotel.”

Did you hear about the mathematician who is afraid of negative numbers?

He’ll stop at nothing to avoid them.

What we are today comes from your thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life tomorrow. Our life is the creation of our mind. Buddha

All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present. Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry - all forms of fear - are caused by too much future, and
not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms
of nonforgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence. Eckhart Tolle
